How to Choose the Best Website Platform for Your Needs (Without the Headache)

Let’s be real—choosing a website platform shouldn’t feel like learning a new language or assembling IKEA furniture without the instructions. Whether you’re just starting your business journey or finally making moves on that “I need a website” to-do list, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is which platform to use. And trust me, the right choice can save you time, money, and a whole lotta stress.

I’m going to break it down for you—not from a super techy perspective, but from a real-life “what’s going to work for you?” approach.

1. Ease of Use Is a Must

I always say: If the platform feels like a math test from high school… run. You want something that feels intuitive—where you can at least log in and find the thing you want to change. Whether you plan to DIY it or work with a website designer (👋🏾 hey, I know a good one), having a system that doesn’t make your brain hurt is non-negotiable.

So if your priority is ease, go for a platform that makes updating text and images easy, doesn’t hide important settings in ten layers of menus, and has a solid help center or someone you can actually call. Comfortability matters. You have to use this thing. Not just your designer.

2. Let’s Talk E-Commerce

Selling something online? Welcome to the wild (but wonderful) world of e-commerce. If you’re serious about selling, Shopify is my top pick. It’s made for product based businesses—from product management to payments to marketing tools, it’s got it all. Plus, it’s built to grow with you.

I’ve also heard great things about WooCommerce—especially if you’re already using WordPress. It gives you lots of flexibility if you’re a little more tech-comfortable or have someone in your corner who can manage the backend.

And if you’re already dabbling in Wix and it feels good to you, don’t fight the flow. Some people love it for its drag-and-drop ease and visual freedom. If that’s you, I say do what works—as long as you’re not sacrificing what your business needs for what’s just easy.

3. Know Thyself (and Thy Time)

Be honest: Do you want to learn a new system, or do you want someone to just build it for you and hand it over with the keys?

Some of my clients want full control. Others say, “Tahquetta, please just make it look good and make sure it works.” Either answer is fine—but that answer should help guide your platform choice. A website isn’t one-size-fits-all. It should fit you.

4. Get Support—Not Just Software

Here’s a little secret: The platform you choose is only half the battle. Having someone who actually knows the platform and can answer your “what does this button do?” questions? That’s a game changer.

So whether you’re going DIY or working with a pro (again—hi, hey, hello 👋🏾), make sure you’ve got a support system that matches your comfort level. Your business deserves that.

Let’s get your website off your to-do list and into the world.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
